Summary: Since 2008, the University of Texas at Austin, Cornell University, and ASTRA LLC have been developing a dual-frequency, software-defined, embeddable GPS-based space-weather sensor. This receiver, called CASES, has now been deployed at the South Pole and at several other locations across North and South America. But CASES is an earth-bound sensor—its hardware and software configuration assume deployment on a static, terrestrial platform. Yet there is increasing demand for a sensor with CASES's features (small, low-cost, software-defined) that can be used for precision orbit determination and occultation science onboard low-earth-orbiting spacecraft. Therefore, as a follow-on to CASES, the Radionavigation Laboratory is developing the FOTON sensor, a space-ready occultation and precision orbit determination GPS receiver.
